WELLING moved another point closer to Blue Square South safety on Saturday after holding in-form St Albans at Park View Road.

With none of the teams in the bottom 10 winning, it was certainly a point gained for the Wings and a deserved reflection of the afternoon.

Chances were at a premium for both sides although Welling boss Andy Ford was far from happy with their performance, especially in the first half.

“The stats in the first half would have been in their favour,” said Ford.

“Our system didn’t work, we didn’t win enough balls in midfield and we knew that we needed to change that at half-time.

“We had a few lads who were not quite on it, like we have been in recent weeks, and I’ve told them that.”

St Albans had the better of the first half and went close after 18 minutes when Hassan Sulaiman cut inside from the right and sent a curling left-foot shot just past the far post.

Sulaiman went off with a pulled hamstring on the half-hour and the visitors, for all their possession, were restricted to long-range attempts.

Welling improved after the break, but Sam Gargan failed to find a team-mate from a good position on the hour mark and Orlando Smith dragged his effort wide.

The Wings were indebted to a fine Robbie Ryan block to deny St Albans substitute Hamza Twomey while the dangerous Smith skipped past two challenges to set up Sonny Cobbs but he was unable to apply the finish.
