Hampton & Richmond 4 Welling 0
TEN-man Welling suffered another second-half collapse as they lost to play-off chasing Hampton & Richmond on Saturday.
For the second game running the Wings more than held their own for the best part of an hour, but their defensive frailties were there for all to see in the final 35 minutes.
The game will also be remembered for a shocking refereeing performance from Stephen Phipps. His controversial decision to award two second-half penalties in the space of five minutes cost Welling any chance and proved the decisive moments of the match.
On 54 minutes, keeper Jamie Turner appeared to make little contact with Elliott Godfrey, but the official pointed to the spot and booked the Wings stopper. Godfrey made no mistake with the spot-kick.
The Wings were down to 10 men three minutes later when defender Chris Moore was harshly adjudged to have dragged down Godfrey when the Hampton striker originally ran straight at the Wings defender.
Booked seconds earlier for a foul on the halfway line, Moore collected his second booking and Godfrey made no mistake from the spot again.
Welling kept Hampton at bay until stoppage time when Ian Hodges scored twice in two minutes from close range to compound Welling's misery.
The Wings, like the official, left the field to a chorus of boos and manager Neil Smith's departure is now on the cards more than ever.
