Welling's chances of avoiding relegation received a massive boost with their first home win since early November in Blue Square South on Saturday.

An action-packed game saw both sides reduced to 10 men and the Wings hold on for three precious points during six minutes of second half stoppages.

Welling started brightly and Sam Gargan, twice, and Orlando Smith both went close before the Wings took a 25th minute lead.

Debutant keeper Steve Williams' long kick created havoc in the Weston defence and Gargan was hauled down by keeper Ryan Northmore. The refereee pointed to the spot and sent Northmore off before Wings skipper Richard Carpenter converted the spot-kick.

Without a substitute keeper Weston's Marc McGregor went in goal, but Welling failed to test him for the rest of the half and were pegged back seven minutes before the break when Lewis Powell's low shot went in off the post.

Welling regained the lead seven minutes into the second half when Ellis Green set up Gargan to produce a low right-foot finish.

The lead could have been extended but Smith's effort was cleared off the line by Andrew Robinson and makeshift keeper McGregor made a great save from Sonny Cobbs.

The Wings were reduced to 10 men for the last 16 minutes when Cobbs rightly picked up his second yellow card, which produced a nerve-jangling finale and only two excellent saves from Williams deep into stoppage time denied Weston a late equaliser.
