Lewes 4 Welling United 2
WELLING felt the full force of an early title-warning from Nationwide Conference South favourites Lewes at The Dripping Pan on Wednesday night.
After an even first half, Steve King's Lewes showed their credentials with an impressive second-half showing that led to three more goals and three points.
Although Welling started brightly, Lewes took a 12th-minute lead when Ian Simpemba's looping header left Jamie Turner with no chance in the visiting goal.
The Wings responded and were level on 22 minutes. Lewis Cook's rash challenge on Che Stadhart gifted the visitors a penalty and striker Danny Kedwell marked his return to the starting line-up by sending Paul Wilkerson the wrong way from the spot.
Lewes regained the lead 31 seconds into the second half when Jean-Michel Sigere broke clear and crossed for ex-Wings striker Paul Booth to score against his former club.
Sigere then beat the offside trap just after the hour mark to score number three.
Welling captain Chris Moore headed against the post from a Jamie Day free-kick with 12 minutes left but Lewes wrapped up the points three minutes from time when substitute Jamie Cade netted.
Substitute Andrew Sam claimed a consolation for Welling two minutes into stoppage time after a fine solo run and shot for his second goal in as many games.
The Wings are away to Eastleigh on Saturday.
