Wings triumph over title favourites

WINNER: Chris Moore
WINNER: Chris Moore

Welling United 1 Weymouth 0

CHRIS MOORE scored the only goal of the game as Welling overcame title favourites Weymouth in front of the biggest crowd of the season at Park View Road on Saturday.

A bright start by the home side was rewarded on 15 minutes. Jamie Day's deep free-kick was headed down by Steve Perkins and Moore reacted quickest to turn the ball in.

Chances were few and far between but it needed a smart stop from Jamie Turner on 31 minutes to deny Shaun Wilkinson.

Then three minutes before half-time Welling's Danny Kedwell set up the returning Adrian Clarke but his low left-foot shot went wide from 20 yards.

Welling should have doubled their lead two minutes after the break when Perkins again rattled the visitors' defence and Kedwell shot inches over after ignoring the unmarked Clarke.

Weymouth skipper Matthew Bound was twice thwarted from free-kicks from the edge of the box by the impressive Turner, who then clung on to Stephen Tully's cross-shot.

The visitors threw four players up front for the closing stages but the Wings rearguard, superbly marshalled by John Guest and Moore held firm for three valuable points.

Wings were further boosted by the news that man-of-the-match Turner signed a one year contract extension after the game.
