AFC Wimbledon 0 Welling 1
Welling kept alive their faint play-off hopes with an impressive win at Blue Square South champions-elect AFC Wimbledon.
The Wings deserved the three points, courtesy of Sanchez Ming’s 74th-minute goal, and could have won by more had they taken their second-half opportunities.
It was Wimbledon's first league defeat in 19 games and only their second home reverse of the campaign.
On the back of Welling's 4-0 win over high-flying Hampton last weekend, it was another statement of intent from Andy Ford's side.
Harry Arter, on loan from Charlton, impressed with a brilliant display in midfield while the back three of Jack Parkinson, Graeme Andrews and Tony Sinclair were immense.
The first real chance fell to the visitors in the 21st minute when Moses Ademola fed James Baker and his right foot shot was beaten away by former Welling keeper James Pullen.
AFC Wimbledon’s best effort came in the 24th minute, when Jon Main’s 20-yard shot was saved at the second opportunity.
On the half-hour, Ademola was denied from close range by a brilliant Pullen save, before Ming hit the rebound wide at the far post.
The second half continued in the same vain, with Welling comfortably dealing with the threat of former Wings striker Danny Kedwell and Main, who was substituted with 20 minutes to go.
Welling's Sam Hurrell had a second-half effort disallowed for offside, but the Wings turned the screw and took the lead with 16 minutes remaining. Hurrell drove into the box and when his left-foot drive came back off the far post, Ming was on hand to convert the loose ball.
Welling should have added to their tally when Baker and then Ademola both went clean through, but were denied by Pullen, who unsurprisingly, was named the home side’s man of the match.
The Wings nearly paid for their missed opportunities, when in the first minute of stoppage time, Kedwell somehow headed over from close range but the Wings more than deserved to claim the three points.
With a game in hand, Welling are nine points off the play-off places with eight matches left to play.
Elsewhere in Blue Square South, Bromley were made to pay for not taking their chances, going down 2-1 on the road at Weston-Super-Mare.
The Lillywhites were behind after just nine minutes when Alex Kite headed home from close range, following a knock-down across the goalmouth from a free-kick.
Luke I’anson got the visitors back on terms on 36 minutes, with a sweetly struck volley from 20 yards. Good work down the Bromley right-hand side saw the ball fall to him on the edge of the area and eventually fly past the outstretched left hand of the home keeper.
However, Marvin Brown’s header on 52 minutes proved to be the winner, as he stooped low to finish at the back post, after the ball had flown across the area. Bromley’s defenders were left motionless and their appeals for offside fell on death ears.
