Welling United 2 – 1 Lewes
SUBSTITUTE Daniel Moore headed a late winner to send Welling second in the Nationwide Conference South at Park View Road on Saturday.
The Wings were indebted to substitute Matt Bodkin for his trickery down the right and Moore was on hand to nod home at the far post.
It was no more than Welling deserved after dominating the first period against Lewes, who started the day in second place.
Lee Shearer and Mark Green both went close in the first four minutes before Chris Moore twice headed over when well placed.
Former Gravesend keeper Paul Wilkerson was fortunate to deny Danny Kedwell and Matt Carruthers hit the top of the crossbar from 25 yards.
The pressure paid off on the half hour when Carruthers’ right-wing corner was helped on by Shearer and Che Stadhart converted from close range.
Lewes responded in the second half and Jean-Michel Sigerre headed high and wide from a corner before Owen Price’s long-range shot was well saved by Jamie Turner.
Chris Moore and Stadhart went close at the other end but Lewes appeared to have snatched a pont with 17 minutes left when Dean Brennan’s right-wing corner was headed home by the unmarked Leon Legge.
Welling hit back as Stadhart twice went close before Moore handed the Wings three crucial points.
