This year we commemorate Queen Elizabeth becoming the first British Monarch in history to achieve a Platinum Jubilee.

Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is inviting residents to join the Mayor of Maidstone for afternoon tea in celebration...however you have to be celebrating your 70th Birthday to attend.

Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952 and is the longest serving British monarch.

She celebrated her Silver Jubilee of 25 years in 1977, her Golden Jubilee of 50 years in 2002 and her Diamond Jubilee of 60 years in 2012.

In honour of the next magnificent milestone, the Mayor of Maidstone is hosting a special afternoon tea on Wednesday, June 1.

The authority is inviting 70 residents in the borough who were born in 1952 to apply for two free tickets - for them and a guest - to join it in commemorating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Along with celebrating the Queen's accomplishment, it is also an amazing way to spend and celebrate their own 70th birthday too.

The Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Fay Gooch, said: “I am delighted that we will be celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Maidstone in such a variety of ways including a traditional Afternoon Tea.

"Even though I won’t be Mayor as unfortunately my official year will have ended, I am so pleased that we are holding a civic event of this kind which will mean that 70 local people who are 70 years old this year along with their guest can celebrate too.

She added: "I am sure it will be a wonderful way for them to meet and share their memories of Maidstone."

The British public are known for pulling out the bunting, baking cakes and pouring the tea in appreciation of the Queen's long-serving reign.

This year, a four-day weekend announced by the government starts from Thursday, June 2, until Sunday, June 5.

As well as the national events that are taking place, Kent County Council (KCC) has also invited residents to apply for a one-day road closure licence, on one of those days during that period.

However no noisy celebrations are allowed, according to KCC's street party regulations.

Maidstone residents born in 1952 who would like to apply for the afternoon tea are asked to complete the online form here.

Tickets are limited, will be reserved in order of application and are subject to the main guest meeting the required criteria.

Successful applicants will be contacted by Sunday, May 1.
