Maidstone’s defeat at Bognor left them only one point off the foot of the Ryman League Premier Division table.
There were few chances in the first half with Maidstone best opening coming when Danny Hockton’s free-kick was kept out by a good save from Darren Behcet.
Tambeson Eyong grazed the post with a shot for Hornchurch and Hockton was again denied by Behcet in first half stoppage time.
The only goal of the game came after 70 minutes when Behcet’s long goal kick found Ross Wall who chipped the ball over Stones keeper Andy Walker and into the net.
Tonbridge swept to a 3-0 victory at Horsham as their push for a play-off place continued.
Anthony Storey’s 25-yard free-kick gave them the lead after eight minutes.
Sam Long headed home Storey’s free-kick after 51 minutes and substitute Jay May scored the third from close range in first half stoppage time.
