ANN Widdecombe, MP for Maidstone and the Weald, is to star as a television agony aunt in a new BBC series.

Ms Widdecombe, well known for her forthright views and uncompromising style, is to dispense advice to members of the public in their own homes about how they can solve their personal problems.

Producers say that Ms Widdecombe's direct style and personality will come into its own as she travels around the country listening to people’s dilemmas.

The MP will know very little about each case before she knocks on the door but, according to the programme makers, will use “her own firm beliefs and personal life experiences” to give helpful advice.

The programme follows Ms Widdecombe's stint as an agony aunt for The Guardian newspaper.

Producer Emily Cumming said: “We approached Ann because she is known for her straight-talking and no-nonsense style. She is someone who is pretty direct but also very personable and we felt she would be good for the job.”

Filming for the series begins later this month and programme makers are looking for participants to share their problems.
