A CANCER charity is warning residents to beware of conmen collectors believed to be operating in the mid-Kent area.

Macmillan Cancer Relief says supporters have alerted it to people who are going door to door asking people for sponsorship money and then pocketing the cash.

The alarm was raised after several of the charity's fundraisers were approached in their homes by conmen claiming to be undertaking non-existent sponsored events.

Macmillan Cancer Relief is warning that some bogus callers may even have fake sponsor forms listing fictitious names of sponsors.

Macmillan fundraiser Helen Draper said: "IF people have concerns, any charity is more than happy to check a caller's ID. If a stranger asks for a cash donation at the door, don't give it to them.

"No charity asks people to raise money this way and you should call the local police who will investigate further."

Maidstone and Malling Police say residents should always ask for identification from people who call without an appointment.

Anyone still not happy is asked to call the charity or company by using a number from the telephone directory to check the caller is genuine. If you have doubts close the door and call the police.
