A care home resident became a supercentenarian yesterday.

The day saw Vera Pigott, who lives at Sutton Valence Care Home, turn 110 and the occasion was not played down.

Family and residents joined the mother-of-four at the North Street home to watch a variety of live music through the day and enjoy a buffet lunch.

Liz Day, manager of the home, said: “It was a really lovely and happy day.

“She had lots of visitors as well as everybody at the home celebrating with her.

“She looked lovely too.”

Mrs Pigott was born an only child in East London in 1905.

She married Douglas Pigott, a bank clerk in 1924, and served as a full-time mother and housewife for 23 years before going on to work as a copy typist.

Sadly her husband died in 1988.

The couple had four children, Beryl Felton, 88, Monica Houston, 78, Donald, who died aged 79 in 2009, and Graham, who is 68.

The title of the oldest person in Kent title falls to Alice Ducat, of Hythe, who is 61 days older.

The longest lived person recorded in the UK was Charlotte Marion Hughes, who passed away in March 1993 aged 115 years and 228 days.
