POLICE have collected 154 weapons and more than 4,000 rounds of ammunition in Kent in the first week of a gun amnesty.

The month-long amnesty was launched nation-wide last week in an attempt to halt a rise in gun-related crimes.

Kent Police also collected 19 "other" weapons during the week, including knives and scissors. The figures were broken down into police areas.

The highest number of weapons - including handguns, rifles and shotguns - handed over was 22 in the Weald.

In West Kent 16 guns were handed over, Medway collected 13, Swale had 12 and Maidstone had 10. Kent Police headquarters, in Sutton Road, Maidstone, collected 3 guns.

Police collected 4,165 rounds of ammunition including 1,378 rounds in West Kent, 616 rounds in Medway and 444 rounds in the Weald.

Most of the "other" weapons - 16 out of 19 - were collected in the Weald. The remaining three were in Medway.
