A multi-million pound town centre building, which has plans for a hotel, has been put on the market.

The former RBS site in Maidstone High Street, which is now occupied by the Mallus Indian restaurant, is now available.

The freehold of the building is up for sale at £2.2million, with estate agents James Ashley explaining the landlord has “prepared drawings for a proposed hostel/hotel use” and “would like to find an operator or tenant before submitting to the local authority”.

Previously, the 12,530 sq ft site was used as a bank but agents say it can be used for leisure, educational, medical, training or religious purposes, or a nightclub would also be considered.

On the second and third floors there are areas which provide further office rooms, additional kitchen facilities and toilets. There are also three car parking spaces at the rear.

There have been many discussions about introducing a hotel into the town centre, with plans for a “state of the art” Hotel Mumu in Week Street, as well as a proposals for an eight-storey hotel back in 2019.

If approved, the plans aimed to create an estimated 44 jobs and were submitted to the council for the former Mothercare site, which shut in 2019.

Ideas for the project included a rooftop bar, with the hotel backing on to Wyke Manor Road.

Property management firm Assetrock, which was behind the scheme, believed it would boost tourism and boost spending in the County Town by around £650,000 a year.
