Hengist Court is sheltered housing made up of 73 self-contained retirement flats managed by a team of staff from First Port.

An eyewitness in Marsham Street told KentOnline: "A car was waiting to get through the barrier for a good five minutes. Looks like all systems go inside."

The victim was flown to a major trauma centre in the capital. Her condition is not known at this time.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "A 79-year-old from Maidstone has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in custody.

"Enquires are ongoing."

Kent Online has approached First Port for a comment.
