Arrest after man reported to be threatening people with baseball bat in Earl Street, Maidstone

Police have made an arrest after people were reportedly threatened by a man with a baseball bat.

The suspect was said to have caused a disturbance yesterday in Earl Street, Maidstone at around 2.15pm.

Witnesses reported seeing a man walking around waving what looked to be a baseball bat above his head.

One witness said: “He stood still for a little while but if you went near him or looked at him he would head towards you and begin chasing you.

“By the time police were there he was by Drakes.

“It was so frightening my shoe broke because I ran away so fast. Everyone was crossing the road to avoid him.”

A spokesman for Kent Police said: “We were called to a report of a man causing a disturbance in Earl Street, Maidstone.

“Officers attended the scene and a man in his 30s was arrested in Medway Street on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.”
