A key route over the River Medway is closed.

Teston Bridge just outside Maidstone closed yesterday morning and will remain closed for four weeks while contractors struggle to fix the damage done after it was hit by a lorry.

However, at the end of the four weeks, although the bridge may reopen, Teston Lane will remain closed to through traffic until December 1.

That closure is for work to start on renovating the railway level-crossing further up the hill.

The single-lane bridge is a listed ancient monument, having been built of ragstone in the 14th century.

At present, while the bridge is closed, it is still possible to access the Teston County Park from the A26 Tonbridge Road.
