Police are investigating after a buzzard had to be put to sleep after being shot near a village.

The bird of prey fell into a garden in Otham Street, Otham, near Maidstone, at around 3.30pm on Friday.

Kent Police's rural task force is investigating the incident after the buzzard had to be euthanised.

It was taken to a vet for treatment but its injuries were too serious to save it.

Buzzards are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and officers are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

Police Sergeant Darren Walshaw said: "We are investigating this incident with colleagues from the RSPCA and suspect the bird was shot.

"We understand there were several people in the area at the time including walkers, residents in their gardens, and two people who were on the roof of a nearby property.

"We are urging anyone that can assist our inquiries to contact us."
