Call for CCTV on thug-infested estate

RESIDENTS are backing a campaign for CCTV cameras on an estate where they claim gangs of youths are causing wide-scale distress.

More than 400 people have given their backing to a campaign led by Neighbourhood Watch for cameras to be installed at Senacre parade at Maidstone. Residents say the area is a magnet for gangs of up to 40 youths who are victimising and terrorising elderly residents.

Bernie Smith, 69, of Shoreham Walk, Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for Senacre for six years, said: "The other night there was a gang of youths ringing on people's doors and throwing mud and stones at the windows. This happens a lot on the estate. It is trying to catch them that's the problem. There's so many places they can hide."

Mr Smith, said three elderly people had been beaten up on the estate in the past 12 months. The latest incident took place just two weeks ago when witnesses reported a pensioner being knocked unconscious by youths who hit him over the head with a plank of wood.

Mr Smith said: "These yobs come here from all over. With cameras everywhere else it is just pushing them on to this estate. I think cameras would have a big impact on it. We want it stopped and it is the only way I can think of."

The petition is being presented to Maidstone Borough Council by the ward councillors for Senacre. Cllr Danny Murphy (Lab) said: "There are a large number of elderly and vulnerable people who live in Senacre and they should not live in fear of intimidation.

"Nearly as many people signed this petition as voted in the recent elections. This clearly demonstrates just how strong local feeling is."

The petition will be presented at full council and referred to the relevant cabinet member.
