A car has been destroyed by fire on a busy residential road in Maidstone.

Pictures show the Vauxhall Astra completely burnt out at the corner of Upper Fant Road and Hackney Road.

Emergency services were called shortly after 4pm yesterday, a time when many youngsters were walking home from nearby schools.

A post on Facebook suggests the fire was started deliberately and warned drivers to approach the Hackney Road corner with care.

A police spokesman said: "We received reports of an abandoned and burnt out car at 4.09pm on December 8.

"Kent Fire and Rescue Service will work to determine the cause of the fire, which may result in a police investigation."
