CCTV has captured the moment a speeding car plunged into a cat leaving it injured before driving away.

Two-year-old Luna was sitting outside her home in Beckett Close, Maidstone, when the accident happened.

Her owner, Veronica Rosca says the driver was 'racing' up and down the road all night and hopes the 'heartless' person who left Luna injured will be caught.

The 39-year-old added: "We live in a cul-de-sac and it's maybe 50 or 60 metres long so I can't believe how fast they were going.

"What's even more shocking is that they just started laughing after.

"She was lucky to have no bones broken but even so she is in a lot of pain and was unable to move herself for a while after.

"She is eating but she is in a state.

"My two children are heartbroken and they can't even sleep.

"It was my cat this time but it could so easily have been a human or a small child because the way they were driving was so dangerous."

As soon as she saw the footage, Ms Rosca says she reported the incident to Kent Police and the RSPCA.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We are aware of this distressing incident and are looking into it.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to discuss complaints about specific people and what action may have been taken.

"We understand how frustrating that is for animal lovers but releasing information could prejudice a future prosecution or could lead to us being fined.

“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure people we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.”

Luna was injured on Sunday, June 13, just after 11pm.

In 2018, Rehman Chishti, MP for Gillingham and Rainham, put forward the Cats Bill calling for the compulsory microchipping of cats, as well as the requirement to report a road traffic accident resulting in the injury or death of a cat to police.

But the Bill failed to complete its passage through Parliament before the end of the session which meant it made no further progress.
