Maidstone council has apologised after it emerged hundreds of residents’ personal details could potentially be viewed online.

More than 870 people are thought to be affected by the error reported when a new car parking permit application site went live on their website earlier this month.

Concerns were raised when eagle-eyed users spotted the site revealed the initial and surname, address, car make and registration number of other residents.

Maidstone Borough Council has now voluntarily informed the Information Commissioner’s Office of the data breach.

A council spokesman said: “We are very sorry for any concern this might cause and will be writing to anyone who could have been affected.

“There is a chance people using an online form could obtain the name, address and car details of other resident permit holders.”

The breach could have only occurred if someone looked up an address other than their own.

The council said the page has been removed from the website and new staff training and procedures will be put in place.
