Watch out next Wednesday (June 5) when 30 Dakotas from the Second World War are due to fly over Maidstone.

The classic aircraft of the Daks Over Normandy flight will be on their way from Duxford Airfield to Caen-Carpiquet in France to take part in the following day's 75th anniversary celebrations of the D-Day landings.

On June 6, 1944, in the biggest sea invasion ever, 156,000 Allied troops landed on five beaches in Normandy, for Operation Neptune, to start the end of the Second Wold War.

But ahead of them, 25,000 airborne troops dropped behind enemy lines. Most of those were carried in Douglas C-47 Skytrains known as Dakotas. More than 800 Dakotas were involved.

This year nearly all the world's remaining Dakotas are gathering to recreate the event.

The will drop 250 re-enactors in Second World War uniforms over the former battlefields, using traditional round-top parachutes.

The aircraft are due to pass over Maidstone at 2.37pm.
