Demolition of a building previously used as a home for nurses is well under way.

The structure, which was opened in the 1920s, is being taken down by Bellway Homes to make way for new homes.

Once complete 69 homes will be built on the Oakapple Lane site, just off Hermitage Lane.

The first signs of work were spotted in September but over the past two weeks progress has taken a significant step forward.

A spokesman from Bellway Homes said: "I can confirm that there has been no delay in our progress in developing the site and work continues as per our original project time frame.

"We are currently reclaiming and salvaging many of the materials and parts of the original building in order that they can be incorporated into the new development."

The site was deemed surplus to requirement by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in May 2012.

Soon after applications to build homes on the site started to come in, which prompted local opposition.

However, efforts to have the building listed by English Heritage failed and planning permission was granted last year.
