The northbound stretch of a busy dual carriageway has reopened after remaining shut for most of the day after a crash involving a lorry.

Police closed the A249 Sittingbourne Road between Junction 7 of the M20 for Maidstone, and Junction 5 of the M2 for Sittingbourne and Sheerness.

A car transporter jack-knifed on the road just after 5am, with some vehicles coming loose from the truck.

The northbound carriageway was closed early this morning while police dealt with the incident, but was reopened around 8am.

It was later shut again due to icy conditions and to allow the vehicle to be recovered.

Kent Highways said the route was open again by about 5.30pm.

The male driver of the lorry was checked over by paramedics, but did not need hospital treatment.

Kent County Council warned the road was likely to remain closed for the rest of the day, including the evening rush hour, due to icy conditions.

But this evening, its Highways department tweeted to say it had been cleared.

The southbound carriageway remained open, but was very slow heading into Maidstone.
