A fault at a substation caused nearly 3,000 homes in Barming to lose power yesterday.

A "big bang" was heard by a resident in Rede Wood Road at around 4.30pm.

Tina Washington said the "explosion" came from an electricity sub station and there was initially a small fire which was put out.

Fire crews attended as well as UK Power Networks engineers.

It was thought yesterday evening that nearly 2,000 homes had been left without power but UK Power Networks have since confirmed 2,935 customers were affected.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: "Our engineers worked quickly and safely to restore electricity supplies to customers in Barming, Maidstone, after a fault on a piece of equipment at a substation initially interrupted supplies to 2,935 customers at 4.44pm yesterday.

"Most supplies were restored within 40 minutes and the final 49 properties were reconnected by 5.50pm. We appreciate how difficult it is to be without power and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
