Fire near North Borough Junior School in Peel Street, Maidstone

Emergency services were called to a blaze in the grounds of a primary school.

Fire crews and police were sent to Peel Street, Maidstone, at around 5pm to a fire near North Borough Junior School and found a large outbuilding aflame.

Police shut the road and two engines were pictured in the street, with firefighters trying to put out the blaze.

One eye-witness who was walking his dog and spotted the fire, said it was coming from an outhouse behind the school.

The 56-year-old added: "There is a lot smoke coming over the fences near the school and the fire service are dealing with it at the moment.

"It doesn't look like anyone was in the building when it caught alight."

A spokesman for the Kent Fire and Rescue Service said fire fighters were: "Called to reports of a fire in a junior school in Peel Street, Maidstone. Two fire engines were sent to the school and on arrival crews found a large brick outbuilding well alight.

"The building that had a wooden shed attached measured around 10 metres x 7 metres. Crews used hose reel jets and a main jet to fully extinguish the fire.

"The cause of the fire isn't known at this stage. There were no reported injuries."

Police spokesman Richard Spillett confirmed officers were called to a report of a fire in Peel Street, Maidstone at 5.05pm and they were there to help Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Pupils were understood to have returned to classes at the school this week.
