Medway and Maidstone Athletic Club entered the National Junior League Southern promotion match at Copthall Barnet Stadium with their strongest team of the season and finished fourth.

Despite beating the Medway division champions Tonbridge AC for the first time this season – by 51 points – neither club managed to qualify for promotion to the Southern Premier Division for 2010.

The match was won by The Saxons, with 534 points, from City of Norwich (491) and Basildon Beagles (454.5). Medway and Maidstone (436) were fourth, ahead of Southampton (414), Tonbridge (385), Kingston (280.5) and Brighton and Hove (272).

Lucy Underdown celebrated her final Junior League appearance by winning the athlete-of-the-match award with victories in the shot (12.74) and discus (41.78).

Lucy’s sister, Amy, gained maximum points from her four individual events, the triple jump A (10.40), javelin B (27.79), long jump B (4.88) and shot B (9.50).

James Alcock found his form again with victory by one centimetre in the long jump (6.39), supported by Josh Brown who won the B (6.19).

The closest race of the day was the men’s 4x100m relay. Despite breaking the club record for the third time this season, Hitchcock, Baker, Alcock and Wright were placed second with exactly the same time as Basildon Beagles (43.8).
