A window from a second floor flat fell to the ground in a busy pedestrian street.

People walking along the High Street, Maidstone, narrowly avoided the falling glass.

It is believed the frame was blown off by a strong gust of wind.

Witnesses heard a loud crash as the sheet of glass hit the street outside TSB Bank.

A witness said: "I was just walking down the street and the next minute it was there in front of me.

"It probably would have killed someone."

Employees at the TSB Bank swept up the debris.

Police are on the scene and stopping pedestrians from walking below the building for fears of other open windows falling.

Residents on the first floor gave them access to the property but they are still unable to reach those living on the second floor and above.

The renting agency has been notified.
