SMILING FACES: staff and pupils at the school celebrate

MAIDSTONE Grammar School is basking in its new status as a language college. The school has been accepted to specialist status from September.

It will bring an extra £650,000 of Government funding over the next four years.

The school will now extend it curriculum and work more closely with the wider community; in partnership with other schools, local and international businesses and community groups.

One third of the funding must be spent on community links, and MGS is particularly intent on working with primary schools.

Head teacher Neil Turrell said: "The school has prided itself on its international dimension not least through the introduction and success of the International Baccalaureate as an alternative and highly regarded post-16 qualification.

"Being designated as a Language College will not only dovetail well with our post-16 curriculum, but will also serve to enhance and support language development throughout the school and the wider community."
