Dog owners are being urged to respond to a consultation on new rules for walking their four-legged friends.

Plans to expand restrictions on canine companions are being proposed by Maidstone Borough Council as it looks to introduce a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for dog control.

The local authority is seeking to extend its powers with the aim of encouraging more responsible dog ownership.

New regulations being proposed would extend restrictions, including requiring owners to put a dog on a lead when asked to do so by an authorised officer, and making it an offence to fail to keep dogs on a lead within the grounds of Sutton Road Cemetery, to allow dogs in designated play areas or to allow a dog to be stray.

The Kennel Club has now urged owners to submit their views to the council, saying the new PSPO could have a lasting impact on the ways in which owners can access popular walking sites with their dogs.

Holly Conway, head of public affairs at the Kennel Club, said: "The proposals within this consultation could significantly impact dog owners across Maidstone.

"The Kennel Club does not oppose the use of PSPOs and, indeed, advocate for them as useful, non-invasive tools to clamp down on a small minority of irresponsible dog owners. However, we would strongly encourage all residents and businesses to respond to ensure their voice is heard."

The consultation is open until Sunday and can be found on the council website here
