Storms hit Kent as the UK's hottest-ever day came to a dramatic end.

Dramatic pictures showed lightning strikes in the Maidstone, Canterbury, Dover and Ashford areas last night.

Earlier the Met Office provisionally confirmed Tuesday had been the UK's hottest-ever day, with temperatures in some parts of the country hitting 40C.

Forecasters had warned storms were set to hit the county on Wednesday, but they arrived earlier than expected.

Lightning strikes were caught on camera in Maidstone and Aldington just after 10pm on Tuesday and also hit parts of Medway.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the south of the country from 1pm on Wednesday.

It comes after blistering heat hit the county, causing a number of problems for residents.

The agency said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms may bring disruption during Wednesday afternoon.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
