The continued closure of the A26 Tonbridge Road just outside of Maidstone due to emergency gas works is causing big problems for motorists – and residents.

The situtation is being aggravated by the fact that there are simultaneous road works on the Lower Road through East Farleigh, at the top of Station Hill, with a four-way temporary traffic light system in play.

With the A26 closed near the junction at Teston Lane, many motorists are attempting a diversion via Teston Bridge, Lower Road, and East Farleigh Bridge – although this is not the sign-posted route.

When they do, they hit the delays at the top of Station Hill.

The problem is even worse for traffic headed out of Maidstone towards Tonbridge who take that route because traffic flows over the single-lane medieval bridge at East Farleigh are already restricted.

Desiree Home who lives in Riverside Park said: “This is crazy.

“Farleigh Lane and Station Hill have been at virtual standstill for the past few days. I'm fuming.”

“Yesterday, there was a total impasse at the junction of Station Hill because of traffic cones and temporary four-way traffic lights even though no workmen were there.

“If I could go another route I would, but I live off this road and have no choice.

“Heaven help us if we need the emergency services.”

The official diversion is via Hermitage Lane, the A20 London Road, New Road, Wateringbury Road and Red Hill – but that is too much of a detour for many motorists.

Mrs Home has complained to both Kent Highways and to Cllr Simon Webb (Con), her KCC member, but has so far received no response.

The roadworks have halted bus services betwen Teston and Wateringbury to Maidstone.

The situation is no better for those attempting a short-cut diversion on the northern side of the A26.

Cllr Fay Gooch (Ind), who represents Barming and Teston, said: “Last night, it was utter bedlam along North Pole Road. It’s a narrow road with very few passing places – it was awful. Traffic between Barming and Teston was gridlocked.

“That is not to critcise the gas engineers. Obviously we all need them to do a good job.”

One angry resident said: “At 10am Saturday morning, there were no workmen to be seen at either of the holes they have dug in the A26.

“Or perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps it is a hive of activity and they are all just wearing their Hi Invisibility jackets.”
