The final part of a £5.7million road project has begun - a month behind schedule.

While drivers have been getting used to the new gyratory system, which includes two new northbound lanes, the latest changes are aimed at pedestrians.

The work involves the laying of new paving stones at the lower end of Maidstone High Street.

Work has started on relaying the paving at the bottom of the High Street

The final completion date was initially set as November, but that was pushed back to mid-January due to difficulties in sourcing the granite slabs, which were coming from China.

Kent County Council has been approached for a comment about the latest delay.

Northbound off-peak lane closures have been in place all week due to the footway works, and are expected to be lifted on Sunday, February 26.

Meanwhile, the High Street will be closed from 12am today to allow for the final installation of a light column.

The work is the final part of a project that started in June. The new road layout was opened in December and allows traffic heading towards Blue Bell Hill to avoid the bridges system.
