It can trace its history back to Georgian times, but it’s firmly up to date now.

The Muggleton Inn in High Street, Maidstone, reopened to customers on Tuesday after a two-week refit which cost £445,000.

The building was erected in 1827 and author Charles Dickens mentioned Maidstone – or Muggleton as he called it – in the Pickwick Papers in 1836.

It reopened its doors after the refurbishment, which included new carpet throughout and work to the bars.

There has also been a lick of paint to all the woodwork inside, new toilets, and new furniture. It also has a new colour scheme.

Manager Justin More said: “I’m very pleased with how it looks. It looks so much better than it used to. It hadn’t had any work done to it for about 16 years.”
