Jets of water came shooting out of the ground in Hollingbourne after a pipe burst leaving residents without water for several hours.

Teams from South East Water rushed to Eyhorne Street just after 9am and closed the road near The Sugar Loaves pub.

The cause of the rupture has not been confirmed but residents say the problems started when an HGV carrying industrial equipment passed through the village during the morning rush hour.

The leak has now been fixed but the road remains closed.

It is expected to reopen on Saturday.

Andy Beston, Regional Network Manager at South East Water, said: “We’re really sorry to everyone who was impacted by a burst water main in Eyhorne Street, Maidstone, earlier today.

“We were alerted to the burst shortly after 9am and it did cause some customers in the nearby area to temporarily lose their water supply.

“Our repair team reacted quickly and the pipe was fully repaired shortly before 3pm.

"All customers in the area now have their normal drinking water supply.

“Unfortunately, leaks and bursts like this can happen on our vast network of underground pipes which spans more than 9,000 miles.”
