It was the first time in four years that the force were on the hunt for new constables, with the process opening on Monday morning. (July 29)

But despite actively looking for new staff the force are unsure of how many constables they will be able to sign up until the Home Office confirms its 2015/16 budget.

A month ago Kent’s police and crime commissioner Ann Barnes spoke out against a rumoured 8% funding cut, which could result in the loss of 300 jobs.

However, new bobbies will be needed regardless when officers retire or leave the force.

Ms Barnes said: “We have already lost 500 officers through natural wastage so it’s fantastic news that we are now able to open the doors and bring in new blood to the organisation.

“It’s especially important that young people in society have an opportunity to join the force and play their part in keeping our communities safe.”

New recruits will be rolled out from 2014 with a starting salary of £21,000, and full training provided.

Kent Police has seen a £20 million cut in the last two years.

This resulted in 200 new recruits having their places cancelled in July 2010, some of whom had been waiting for nearly two years to start work.

Chief Constable Ian Learmonth said: “The role is demanding, but very rewarding. New officers will work in the heart of communities and be responsible for protecting life and property, as well as bringing offenders to justice."
