The launch date for a free art trail featuring a well-known children’s character has been revealed.

Dozens of colourful Shaun the Sheep sculptures are set to be installed throughout Maidstone at the end of June.

The Shaun in the Heart of Kent trail follows on from the popular Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade in 2021.

It is a partnership between the Heart of Kent Hospice, Wild in Art and Aardman – an award-winning studio based in Bristol and creator of the cheeky character.

Fifty unique sculptures will be placed at various famous landmarks across the town centre.

These include the Maidstone Museum, Kent History and Library Centre, Hermitage Millennium Amphitheatre and the Carriage Museum.

Colourful illustrations, eye-catching graphics, fine art and graffiti have been used to decorate the iconic sheep.

Organisers are hoping it will attract both residents and visitors from far and wide to discover and re-discover the town.

It is set to launch on Saturday, June 29 and will run until Friday, August 30.

The trail will also include 54 little Shauns – each designed and painted by local schools, community organisations, charities and care homes.

One special sculpture has been created by children who are supported by the hospice.

Income generation director for the charity, Ann-Marie Kelly, said: “This is no ordinary trail. Shaun the Sheep will be helping us to raise awareness and funds for our hospice which opened 33 years ago to provide specialist advice, support and outstanding care for people living with a terminal illness.

“We want as many people as possible to enjoy this free and fully accessible trail across the summer and to enjoy making happy memories while exploring Maidstone together.”

The location of each sculpture is shown on the trail map or via a free app, which will be available just before the trail goes live.

Maps can be picked up from Shaun HQ in the town centre, all 14 Heart of Kent Hospice charity shops, Maidstone Museum, Kent History and Library Centre and many other local businesses.

Later this year, people can book a slot to visit all the artwork under one roof at the Farewell Weekend, which takes place between September 13 and 15.

Each sculpture will be auctioned at a live event on Thursday, September 26 to raise funds for the hospice.
