A military charity is being backed by five law firms in a campaign to promoting the importance of having a will.

The Let's Make a Will scheme is part of Royal British Legion Industries' efforts to commemorate a century of supporting former military personnel and disabled people this year.

It comes as research shows 59% of the UK population either don't have a will or have one which is out of date.

RBLI's Steve Sherry signs Let's Make a Will campaign deal with five law partners (11072669)

Since its launch, the campaign has secured the support of Maidstone-based law firm Gullands but also Brachers, Buss Murton, Cooper Burnett and Girlings, with each offering 10 free wills to individuals or couples across the county.

Between them, the firms also operate in Ashford, Canterbury, Dartford, Gravesend, Herne Bay, Sandwich and Tunbridge Wells.

However, if the wills are considered complex due to family structure, size of estate or require tax planning, it has been agreed that solicitors will need to charge for services beyond producing a simple will.

Mr Sherry said: “In this, our 100th year, we are looking at how best to leave a legacy for the future generations of veterans and disabled people we support.

“With more than half of all UK residents not having a will, people also need to think about how best they can leave their own legacy for their families and good causes, which is why we’ve set up the RBLI Let’s Make a Will campaign.

“Every penny donated to RBLI through legacies will go directly to providing crucial care to support severely disabled veterans, as well as those facing homelessness.

“We are really pleased to have been joined by such great legal partners and delighted by their generosity.”

Anyone interested in the campaign should visit rbli.co.uk or email legacies@rbli.co.uk where they will be matched with their nearest law firm or firm of their choice if one of the 10 free wills is still available.

The RBLI needs to raise a further £2 million for the next stage of its Centenary Village project - a landmark scheme it hopes will be the cornerstone of its supportive efforts over the next 100 years.

If every one of the 1.1 million adults currently living across Kent were to donate just £2, this crucial project would be fully-funded - with change to spare for the RBLI’s other worthy causes.

That’s why the KM is launching the ‘Not 2 Much 2 Ask’ campaign - to encourage everyone to make such a donation by the end of the year and ensure this fantastic scheme, for our 2019 Charity of the Year, reaches its potential.

To donate £2, text ‘HOME’ to 70660* or visit rbli.co.uk/not2much2ask.

*Messages will be charged at £2 plus your standard network rate. You must be 16 years old and have the bill payer’s consent.
