Maidstone Leisure Centre is reopening at the weekend but some parents and children might be disappointed.

While much of what the venue has to offer will be welcoming visitors, under 16s will not be allowed for the first week.

Anyone over this age will be able to use the gym, the main swimming pool, pool changing rooms and toilets at the Mote Park centre from Saturday.

Workout classes will also be running.

All other facilities will remain closed for now.

However, swimming lessons will re-commence on Saturday, August 1 for all ages.

This follows the government announcement on Monday, July 9 which detailed when certain business including gyms, swimming pools and beauty salons could welcome customers back.

You must book a session online before entering the leisure centre.

For this, you will need to be a member, either paying a monthly fee or you can become a booking member and pay as you go.

Social distancing must be observed and there will be signs to guide visitors around the building.

The gym has been re-designed to allow more space around equipment and group sizes have been reduced for classes.

It is advised people do not arrive early for your slot as queuing outside is discouraged.

They must sign in and use hand sanitiser at reception as they walk in.

The centre will be open from 7am to midday and 4pm to 9.45pm on weekdays and from 8am to 1.15pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Mike Evans, Maidstone Borough Council's leisure manager, said: "The safety and well-being of all of our members and teams remain the top priority as the doors are reopened for business.

"We want everyone to stay healthy and active during this time but ask all visitors to observe good hygiene and be socially responsible when visiting the centre.

"We are working closely with Serco and Maidstone Leisure Trust to keep everyone safe.”
