There were lengthy queues on both sides of the M20 near Maidstone this afternoon.

Two out of three lanes on the coastbound carriageway between Junction 7 for Detling Hill and Junction 8 for Leeds Castle were closed.

There were conflicting reports about the cause, with Highways England's website putting it down to a crash and a traffic alert service blaming a broken down lorry.

The delay was said to be up to 45 minutes as four miles of traffic files passed the scene.

All lanes were reopened just after 4pm and the lorry has been recovered.

Meanwhile, a second lorry was said to have broken down on the London-bound carriageway of the M20 between Junction 9 at Ashford and Junction 8 for Leeds Castle.
