A major transport project that has cost around £5.7m and caused traffic upheaval for almost six months ends today.

The Maidstone bridges project kicked off on Monday, June 6, and is set to end around 10.30am this morning.

The new layout will allow drivers wanting to travel to Chatham and Blue Bell Hill to bypass the bridge system, and carry straight up the A229 Fairmeadow towards the Stacey's Street roundabout.

Two new northbound lanes have been created at the bottom of the High Street to allow for this project.

There are still two southbound lanes towards Bishops Way, and also two southbound lanes which will turn right over the A20 Broadway bridge.

Traffic lights in the area will be on a manual control initially to allow workers to assess traffic flow.

This monitoring will continue for the first week of the new layout being in place, but traffic lights will be put onto an automated control as soon as possible.

Drivers are already being warned to approach the area around Archbishops Palace with caution however, as the traffic lights are currently out.
