Man arrested after woman ‘raped’ by River Medway, near Lockmeadow in Maidstone

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Officers have been investigating a report that a woman was sexually assaulted by an unknown man near the Lockmeadow leisure complex in Maidstone.

The incident is reported to have happened during Monday (September 2) evening, before the suspect left the scene on foot in the direction of the Millennium Bridge.

It was previously reported that the victim had been sitting in an area near the River Medway when she was approached by an unknown man.

He is said to have tried to engage her in unwanted conversation before then assaulting her over a prolonged period.

On Wednesday (September 4), enquiries led to the arrest of a 37-year-old local man on suspicion of rape.

He was detained at 6.55pm and taken into custody. He has since been released on conditional bail, pending further enquiries.

Officers are continuing to appeal for information which may help the investigation.
