A man in his 20s has been arrested after a woman was raped near a town bridge.

It happened at around 1.50am near the Millennium Bridge at Lockmeadow in Maidstone.

A police van and officers were seen near to the scene, with the man arrested now in custody.

Cordons were put in place close to the bridge, near All Saints Church.

A force spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to allegations a woman had been raped at a location close to the Millennium Bridge in Maidstone.

"Officers attended and carried out a search of the area, and arrested a man from the local area."

He has now been released without charge.

Police say all available lines of enquiry have been explored and the case has been filed, pending any new information.
