A man is due to appear in court charged with drink-driving after a car crashed into a town centre graveyard.

The wall at All Saints Church, in Maidstone, was destroyed and headstone damaged during a crash on Saturday at around 5.30am.

Abolore Shittu, 33, of Barned Court, Maidstone, was subsequently charged with drink driving and was bailed to appear before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on Friday, December 15.

The damage was still visible this morning.

The road had to be closed and a police cordon was put in place while the car was loaded onto a recovery truck.

All Saints Church dates back to about 650 and upkeep of the headstones is a matter for families. Many of the memorials date back to the 1700s and 1800s.
