Police are hunting for a man who was seen indiscriminately shooting at birds with a pellet gun.

The police helicopter was used to try and catch the suspect following a report that a person was seen carrying an offensive weapon in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, at 12.36pm.

A witness reported seeing a man taking pot shots on the bridge system near Fairmeadow and added that he had seen the culprit shooting at people too.

A police spokesman said: " A helicopter was already in the area and hence used to assist with a search. The suspect has not been located.

"Reports now lead us to believe that the person was using a ball bearing type weapon to possibly fire indiscriminately at birds.

"No injuries to people have been reported."

The helicopter has now been stood down but a spokesman said patrols will keep and eye out for anything suspicious.
