After more than a year of lane closures on a busy road network, drivers will be happy to hear works will be completed this week.

Vehicles have had to deal with closures to parts of Maidstone's gyratory system since June 2016, when work began to construct new lanes and change the road layout.

This £5.7 million scheme saw new lanes added to allow drivers to travel up Bishops Way towards Chatham without having to go round the bridge system.

Work on this phase of the Maidstone Bridges scheme concluded in December, when the new road opened.

Renovation works continued on the walkways surrounding the bridge system, and works began on the towpaths along the Medway in early April.

These towpaths works included replacing slabs, planting new trees, upgrading street lighting, and adding new street furniture.

While this work has been going on, there have been lane closures on the northbound A229 Fairmeadow to allow for deliveries and removal of materials.

A spokesman for Jackson Civil Engineering, which has been leading the project, confirmed that crews were planning to leave the site later this week.

They added: "Therefore we aim to remove traffic management with the lane closure at Fairmeadow after Wednesday.

"We would like to thank the public for their continued patience and cooperation since we started work last June, and hope any disruptions were kept to a minimum."

The newly renovated towpaths will be open to the public from Wednesday.
