More than 400 wooden containers have gone up in smoke after a suspicious fire at a farm.

The crates were used for apple picking at the site in Linton Hill, near Maidstone.

Firefighters used compressed air foam, alongside water, to stop the flames which broke out just before 7.15pm yesterday.

The farmer was also on the scene and some of the remaining containers were allowed to burn out under controlled conditions.

Crews dampened down the area immediately surrounding the fire to help prevent it spreading and keep it contained.

Kent Police officers were also called as it is believed that the fire may have been started deliberately. There were no casualties.

A force spokesman said officers were called in by the fire service, adding: "Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to phone Kent Police on 01622 604100 quoting reference number 08-1567."

Emergency teams left just before 9pm.
