Mote Park pair win national indoor bowls title

ENGLAND internationals Ann Hill and Sandy Hazell have brought further honours to Maidstone's Mote Park Indoor Bowls Club.
They secured the English Women’s Indoor Bowling Association Ladies National Pairs title in a thrilling final in Basingstoke.
Having played through the qualifying rounds of the competition since October, the pair won their place in the final by beating the Cumbria pair of Cindy and Karen Emondson in the semi-final 26-16.
With the news reaching the Mote Club, a few members drove to Basingstoke to give their support in the final, where they faced East Dorset.
With the score at 12 ends 15-9 in favour of the East Dorset pair, the match seemed to be slipping away from the Maidstone ladies but they fought back over the next four ends with nine shots to take an 18-15 lead.
Back came East Dorset to start the last end with a 20-18 advantage, leaving the Mote looking for three shots for victory. This seemed unlikely as Sandy Hazell prepared to bowl her last wood needing to remove two opposing bowls without moving the jack.
Sandy held her nerve to produce a perfect takeout, giving the Mote the three shots they needed to claim the title, adding to the National Singles Championship won by Sandy in 1997.
Success means the pair will represent England in the British Isles Championships this month.
