A train operator has incurred the wrath of a Kent MP after it was announced a new service's launch has been delayed.

Govia Thameslink announced last week that plans for a new cross-London service between Maidstone East and Cambridge had been pushed back.

The service, which would also call at West Malling, Borough Green, Wrotham and Otford before calling at London Bridge, Blackfriars and St Pancras, was due to launch in May 2018.

It will now not be in operation until December 2019.

Helen Grant MP is furious about this decision, and has demanded answers from the operator.

The Maidstone and the Weald MP said: "I am furious that Maidstone has been put to the back of the queue for these important service improvements; our County Town deserves better than this."

Mrs Grant had a meeting with rail minister Paul Maynard yesterday, and says he has agreed to re-examine the situation regarding Maidstone's rail links.

She added: "He has also invited me to meet with the lead officials from the DfT to discuss the changes, and will be making arrangements for that meeting forthwith."

Mr Maynard said: "Improving rail services is a priority for this government, which is why we are making the biggest investment in the network since Victorian times - including £7 billion expanding the Thameslink network, which will transform north to south travel across London and the South East.

"I am committed to further developing the implementation of the Thameslink Programme to ensure passengers realise benefits in the shortest possible time."
